Swim - Poem

FEBRUARY 2017

She wished to swim out into the ocean and leave everything behind.
Yet it was her mind holding her back...
Walls like a million stacks of a million pieces of paper.
Each one carefully etched with doubts.
Doubts like knives, ripping through the papers they were written on.
Until they tore right through her walls.
Releasing her.
Letting in the darkness that lurked just beyond the safety of her mind.
She escaped, only to be followed by the thief in her head.
Forever stealing her happiness.
Leaving her with nothing but emptiness.
Emptiness like the bottomless ocean she so wished to swim.
Only she was already drowning in this ocean of despair.
This empty ocean as vast as her mind.
Perhaps that's what she wanted all along.
Emptiness, void of all feeling.
No, she wanted more.
She swam.
Swam with all her might for something better.
A way out of this void.
